The file can cost more than separate tickets. You open it for names, seats, and one invoice, not for a promised percent off.

What an airfare group is
People type "airfare group", "group airfare", and "group airfare booking" for the same job. They have a party. They want one price conversation, not fifteen checkouts.

Groupon is a deals site. An airfare group is an airline file, or a specialist file that asks the airline for one. Do not mix them.
What the file actually does
A group fare file is a commercial tool. It can hold seats before every name is known. It can put one invoice in front of finance. It can keep the party on the same flights when a public fare disappears mid-booking.
It does not do those things on every airline page. On 27 October 2026 we opened two public pages:
- easyJet's help page lets a party of up to 40 book on the website if every name is in at booking and one card pays in full. The group scheme reserves from 10 up to 99 seats without every name at the start. It charges a small per-person fee. The fee amount is not on that page. Name changes are free up to 5 days before travel. Names are due 5 days before departure. Inside those 5 days, fees apply. The amount is not on the page. Unused flights are non-refundable.[1]
- Ryanair's groups page is for more than 15 passengers. The terms set the minimum at 15. Payment is 100 percent at booking. All names are due 7 days before outbound. A name change, once names are in or within 7 days of outbound, is €50 or £50 per person per sector. The quote is valid for 5 days, subject to availability. Bookings through the groups department cannot be resold online.[2][3]
Those are two airline pages. They are not an average. A third airline will print a third floor. Read the page that matches the quote.

Airfare group rates are not a discount
Search suggestions include "group airfare discounts" and "can you get a group discount on flights". Treat that as a question, not a promise.
A group rate is the price on a written quote. It can be lower than the screenshot you saw at 9am. It can be higher. The screenshot is one seat, one moment, often with a name required now. The group file is a block, a deadline, and a set of rules. Those are different products. Collapsing them into a savings percent is how organisers get surprised.
If the party is small, the names are final, and nobody needs to sit together, buy the public tickets. The decision page is the 8-factor matrix.
What to send before anyone talks price
Send the number of people, the cities, the dates, and whether the names are closed. Say if some people fly home on a different day. Say who pays.
Do not send a hoped-for percent. A percent is not a route.
Hold rules, when a hold exists, are on hold seats without names. One invoice, when finance needs it, is on one invoice for group travel.
